John Samuel Leaphart papers, 1860-1909.

Chiefly bills, receipts, and promissory notes from business firms, dentists and doctors, pew rent receipts from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, subscriptions to newspapers, tuition and school certificates; including "Diary of Anne C. Leaphart," 8 Nov. 1873 - 26 Apr. 1874, containing daily record of school grades in the class of S.C. Goodwin; invitations, 2 May 1876, to attend "Anniversary of the Richland Rifle Club, Second Annual Basket Picnic," and 3 May 1877, to the inaugural ball honoring Gov. Wade Hampton; and receipt, 23 Oct. 1878, for contributions to the "Bachman Endowment Fund of Newberry College." Other items include materials re the "Classical and Mathematical School, R.H. Clarkson, Principal," Columbia Female College, the College for Women, and Winthrop Normal College. Also includes 3 volumes, 1859-1890, account books containing roll of Governor's Guards, personal expenses, list of property remaining after Sherman's raid; accounts as executor of estate of G.B. Nunamaker and Mrs. Lucy E. Leaphart, yearly income including post office salary; and guardianship accounts for W.H. Caldwell.
